The Wild South

Why This Trip is In a Category of Its Own

South Komodo is where the ocean gets serious. Cold upwellings, nutrient-rich currents, and some of the most dramatic marine encounters on the planet. One day, three dives, zero compromises.

🦈

Hammerhead Sharks — The Main Event

South Komodo's thermoclines attract scalloped hammerhead sharks in numbers rarely seen elsewhere in Indonesia. We dive into the blue water column at 30–40m, hovering in the cold current as these prehistoric animals pass below. Peak season June–October but sightings happen year-round.

Oceanic Mantas — Manta Alley

Manta Alley in South Komodo is one of the only places in Indonesia where oceanic manta rays — the larger, rarer cousin of the reef manta — are seen regularly. These giants can span over 6 metres. The third dive of the day often takes place here as conditions allow.

🌊

Remote Reefs, Raw Ocean Energy

The southern sites are far less visited than Central Komodo — pristine, wild, and unpredictable. Dramatic walls, hard coral gardens, strong thermoclines that drop the visibility to near-nothing one moment and crystal blue the next. This is Komodo the way it should be experienced.

Where We Dive

South Komodo's Four Key Sites

Sites are confirmed on the day based on currents, swell and season. Your guide always selects for maximum encounter potential and safety.

01
🦈

Batu Tiga — Hammerhead Point

Advanced

The primary hammerhead site. Three submerged rocks create upwellings that attract pelagics — hammerheads at 30–40m in the blue, accompanied by schooling barracuda, tuna and giant trevally.

02
🐟

Manta Alley — Oceanic Giants

All Advanced

A channel between two islands where oceanic manta rays feed and cruise. Shallower than the hammerhead sites — a dramatic contrast. The current sweeps you alongside these giants in conditions unlike anything in Central Komodo.

03
🪸

Cannibal Rock — Muck Paradise

Intermediate+

Komodo's most celebrated macro site. Nudibranchs, frogfish, ghost pipefish, seahorses — all in extraordinary density on a shallow reef. A perfect contrast dive after the adrenaline of the pelagic sites.

04
🌊

Yellow Wall of Texas

Advanced

A striking wall carpeted in yellow soft corals — one of the most visually arresting dive sites in all of Indonesia. Strong current, rich marine life, and photographic opportunities at every depth.

Common Questions

South Komodo Hammerhead — FAQ

Everything you need to know before booking the most advanced dive trip in Komodo.

This trip is for advanced divers only. We require a minimum of Advanced Open Water certification plus at least 50 logged dives. Strong buoyancy control and experience with drift diving are essential — South Komodo's currents are powerful and conditions can change quickly. If you're unsure whether this trip is right for you, ask us honestly and we'll advise you correctly.
Hammerhead sightings cannot be 100% guaranteed — they are wild pelagic animals. However, South Komodo is one of the most reliable hammerhead locations in Indonesia. Peak season is June to October when thermoclines are strongest. Our guides know these waters intimately and always position the group to maximize encounter potential.
Yes — both fully included. The 3,800,000 IDR price covers all Komodo National Park fees and Nitrox fills for certified Nitrox divers. No hidden charges at the dock. On a three-dive day to depth, Nitrox significantly reduces nitrogen loading and keeps you sharp for every dive.
South Komodo dives typically range from 18m to 40m. The hammerhead sites often require hovering at 30–40m in the blue water column. Your guide sets the dive plan on the day based on conditions, visibility and thermocline position. Cannibal Rock is shallower — a welcome contrast after the deep dives.
South Komodo requires 2 to 2.5 hours of boat travel each way — significantly more fuel and crew time than central Komodo trips. You also get three dives instead of two, plus Nitrox included, on a full day in the most remote part of the park. The 3,800,000 IDR price reflects the actual cost of delivering this experience responsibly.
Strict maximum of 8 guests per boat, with a maximum of 6 divers per guide. On an advanced trip like this, the small group is critical — tighter briefings, closer supervision in challenging conditions, and a more focused, safer experience for everyone.
June to October is peak hammerhead season, when cold upwellings are strongest and the thermoclines most pronounced. However, hammerheads are present year-round and have been spotted in every month. The dry season (April–October) generally offers calmer seas and better conditions for the long crossing to South Komodo.
