Nitrox Diving
in Komodo

In Komodo you dive two or three times a day, often several days in a row. Nitrox (enriched air) gives you more no-stop time at the depths where Komodo's best diving happens. With Manta Dive Komodo it costs 150,000 IDR per day of three dives on day trips, it is included from day three on our longer packages, and if you are not certified yet you can take the PADI Enriched Air course in Labuan Bajo.

Why It Matters Here

Why nitrox makes sense in Komodo

Nitrox is not a gadget. In Komodo, three things make the difference between air and enriched air very real.

Several dives, several days

Day trips run two or three dives, and many guests dive Komodo for several days in a row. Nitrox means less nitrogen absorbed on each of those dives, which gives you more margin over the week.

The depths Komodo is dived at

Komodo's pinnacles, walls and channels are mostly dived between the reef top and 30 m. That is the range where nitrox adds the most no-stop time compared with air.

Current sets the pace

On a drift, the dive ends where the current takes you or when the guide calls it. With more no-stop margin, your computer is less likely to be the reason a good dive ends early.

No Myths

What nitrox does, and what it doesn't

What it does

  • Less nitrogen absorbed at a given depth, because there is less nitrogen in each breath.
  • Longer no-stop time on the same profile. At 30 m, dive tables give about 20 minutes on air against about 30 minutes on EAN32.
  • More margin on repeat days, when residual nitrogen builds up from dive to dive.

What it doesn't

  • It does not let you go deeper. The extra oxygen sets a maximum depth for each mix: about 33 m for EAN32 at a partial pressure of 1.4.
  • It does not replace good habits. Slow ascents, a safety stop and a conservative profile still apply.
  • It is not a cure for tiredness. Some divers say they feel fresher on nitrox; studies on this are mixed.

Yes. The PADI Enriched Air Diver course with theory and certification only costs 3,500,000 IDR and fits around your diving days. A version with three dives costs 6,500,000 IDR.
No, the opposite. The extra oxygen sets a maximum depth for each mix: about 33 m for EAN32, a common mix, at a partial pressure of 1.4. Your guide plans the dive within that limit.
Nitrox reduces the nitrogen you absorb at a given depth, which gives more margin before no-stop limits. It adds an oxygen depth limit instead. It is safe when the mix is analysed, the maximum depth is respected and the computer is set to the mix.
You need a computer that can be set to the nitrox mix you breathe. If you do not have one, you can rent one from us for 150,000 IDR per day.
Drift Diver suits anyone planning North Komodo or South Komodo days, where current is the norm. Deep Diver suits Advanced divers who want proper training for depth down to 40 m. Nitrox pairs well with both.
